Understanding Sizing

Please be advised that this page is intended as a guideline and is not an absolute. Sizing may vary across all ranges and brands carried by Imperator Menswear. For best results, please use the "contact us" form for specific enquiries about product sizes.

Jackets

Fast Facts:

  • Jacket sizing is based around the chest measurement (e.g. "44" means 44 inches at the widest point of the chest)
  • Chest measurements are generally offered in centimetres or inches. Smaller numbers (~34 - 68+) are inches. Larger numbers (~84 - 156+) are centimetres.
  • A letter at the end of the number indicates jacket length for gents of different sizes (Short, Regular, Long).
  • There may be exceptions so please continue reading below for further assistance.

There are two components to jacket sizing which should be used to guide your measurement selections. The first is the number, representing the measurement of the chest at the widest point, and the second is the length of the jacket.

Jacket chest measurements generally come in three formats; metric, imperial and European. General sizing (XS, S, M, L, XL, etc) can be found on jackets but are uncommon. We try to avoid these products where possible as they will require more tailoring for the customer.

Garments measured in centimetres usually go up in size in increments of 4 (e.g. 92, 96, 100, etc) while items that are based on inches and the European system will go up in increments of 2 (42, 44, 46, etc).

Below is an approximate size conversion chart to assist when selecting product sizes:

General Size Centimetres  Inches European
XS 84 - 88 32 - 34 42 - 44
S 92 - 96 36 - 38 46 - 48
M 100 - 104 40 - 42 50 - 52
L 108 - 112 44 - 46 54 - 56
XL 116 - 120 48 - 50 58 - 60
2XL 124 - 128 52 - 54 62 - 64
3XL 132 - 136 56 - 58 66 - 68
4XL 140 - 144 60 - 62 70 - 72
5XL 148 - 152 64 - 66 74 - 76

The letter at the end of the number - S, R, or L - indicates whether the item is Short, Regular, or Long fitting. These are designed to accommodate more body sizes where possible.

Below is an approximate height chart to assist when selecting best jacket length for yourself:

Height (cm) Height (ft) Recommended Length
< 165 < 5' 5" S
166 - 175 5' 6" - 5' 9" R
 > 176 < 5' 10" L

Please note that jacket length is incredibly subjective. Your build may affect what length of jacket is most appropriate to you. Please consider your length option carefully.

Vests

Fast Facts:

  • Jacket sizing is based around the chest measurement (e.g. "44" means 44 inches at the widest point of the chest)
  • Vests do not come in alternative lengths unless otherwise specified.

Like jackets, vest sizes are based around the widest-point of the chest to determine their size. However, this can cause some confusion as many men do not have a vest size that matches their jacket size.

Depending on your shape, you may need to purchase a vest that is one or two sizes up from your jacket size. Men who are portly, tall, or muscular should consider purchasing a larger size vest rather than a vest that matches their jacket size.

If you have concerns about your vest sizing, please reach out to us and we will be happy to assist you in finding the right vest size.

Trousers & Chinos

Fast Facts:

  • Trouser and chino measurements are based around the waistband.
  • Where you wear your trousers should be the point to measure on yourself to gather your size.
  • Trousers with a number marked "xx/xx" indicates waistband/leg measurement, but trousers and chinos with a single number are only supplied in waistband size.

Trousers and chinos have a size based around their waistband, and sometimes their leg measurement. Imperator Menswear, where applicable, notes trouser sizing as "waistband/leg length." If you see a single number, then the trouser or chino is only supplied in a single leg-length.

Like jackets, the three main measurement systems are inches, centimetres and European. Like with other items, sizes provided in centimetres generally go up in increments of 4 for the waistband, and items in both inches and European go up in increments of 2.

Shirts

Fast Facts:

  • Shirt sizes are based around the neck measurement unless stated otherwise.
  • Shirts with a sizing marked as "xx/xx" indicate neck/sleeve measurement, but shirts with only a single number are supplied in neck measurement only.

To determine the size of your shirt, you should measure the size of your neck at the widest point, or where the shirt collar will sit on you in a comfortable location.

Shirts can come with two sizes noted on them; a shirt with two numbers formatted as "xx/xx" will indicate "neck/sleeve" length. Items with a single number provided are supplied with only a neck measurement and may require further alteration by you.

Our garments all use Australian sizing and so conversion sizes have been provided for general and centimetre measurements.

Shoes

Fast Facts:

  • Shoes are sold in 3 different systems - UK, US and EU

The three main shoe sizes present in Australia are the UK, US and EU systems. Unfortunately there is no "one" system used and many manufacturers will attach whatever they want. This can be incredibly frustrating for everyone.
